Karlstraße

Residential building

The piece of property at Karlstrasse 8 lies in an elegant district of Hamburg called Winterhude and faces south towards the Feenteich pond, not far from the Aussenalster, a lake in the midst of the city. The cosmopolitan flair of this residential neighbourhood along with its exclusive location between the pond and the outer Alster lake make this address one of the best in the Hanseatic metropolis. At the same time, the quiet Karlstrasse and spacious plot of land provide for a very private residential ‛feel’.
As far back as the 18th century, a home in the erstwhile “Eulennest” enclave, the ‛Owls’ Nest’, had been coveted by the wealthy haute bourgeoisie. Genteel town mansions with marvellously laid out gardens, spacious park paths and romantic canals characterise the surroundings and bear silent witness to their exclusiveness. Set in a central yet placid atmosphere, the location unites Hanseatic tradition and a modern attitude towards life. In the immediate vicinity Hamburg’s sailing folk have been honing their skills for 144 years at the Norddeutscher Regatta Verein – one of the oldest sailing clubs in Europe with an equally grand wealth of tradition. Extensively designed park paths are an ample invitation to stroll around the Alster, while numerous upmarket offers to ‛wine and dine’ along with exclusive options for shopping lend the Karlstrasse its urbane ‛feel’ for both life and living.

The individual and unique form language imparts a distinctive appearance to the building structures. In keeping with this, the new building in the Karlstrasse conceived and designed by Hadi Teherani sets itself apart from accustomed shapes and presents itself in sophisticated and simultaneously timeless attire. The impressively open and spaciously designed eight flats offer a new feeling of freedom in the home. Hadi Teherani is convinced that only an accomplished synthesis of the three components architecture, interior design and product design subsequently leads to an atmospherically consummate space. In the process “the architect’s conceptual view lends wings to the designer’s inquisitiveness and innovative capability,” according to Teherani. Holistic enactment – from the basic underlying structure to the smallest decorating detail – is required first to open the way to one-of-a-kind, individualised forms of residential life.

»My yardstick for designing human beings’ existence in the private sphere lies in being able to ‘breathe’ in the rooms. Not only in the sense of getting air but in the sense of breathing freely, an expansion and vitalisation of human existence. My goal is not the architectural manifestation alone; it’s the living environment, the structural component as the basis for personality. «Hadi Teherani
