BP-Zentrale Bochum
Office building»... Arising from the ‘building blocks’ at this site in the park landscape, from the resources presented by old buildings, a portion of which are to be preserved, and from the construction of new building components suffused with daylight, a new spirit and a new identity are supposed to be created through the planned overall concept for the BP/Aral location. The planning’s mission and objective is the genesis of a new ensemble on the corporate premises of BP/Aral on Wittener Strasse in Bochum that is more than merely the sum of its individual elements ... «
A development concept was designed on the basis of the area’s evolved inner-city structure along Wittener Strasse in relation to Kortumpark, a park complex and former cemetery, and the complex user-specific demands involved. The concept is tailored to fit into the pre-existing structure while setting new accents on Wittener Strasse. A 7-storey complex of new buildings is planned that incorporates the resources exhibited by old buildings worthy of being preserved. Together with the existing building section B still in place, which shall be renovated in the course of construction activities, the combination forms a new urban development and architectural unit in one.
In a city planning sense, the scheduled new building mass is subdivided into single structures in order to respond to the surrounding urban arrangement dominated by villas. A one-storey footing or base zone in which the conference areas are located progresses from Kortumpark to the 7-storey entryway structure on Wittener Strasse that accommodates the alignment perspective provided by the existing old building. The individual, parallelogram-shaped ‘office units’ facing Kortumpark are suspended above the base zone to the northern side of the property. The planned open building structure makes it possible to orient a major portion of the workplaces in the direction of the adjoining Kortumpark. What consequently emerges are workplaces suffused with daylight in an office landscape that dovetails with the park. This intermeshing fulfils the specifications set for modern and administrative buildings while integrating existing resources posed by old buildings, thus providing the user with a maximum of flexibility.
