ATMOSPHERE by Krallerhof
SPA- and wellness destinationLeogang, AustriaWe were successful in an international architectural competition for this prestigious project. With the vision of a spa that, despite its size and dimensions, blends organically and harmoniously into the mountain landscape and creates space for an innovative form of regeneration and inspiration all year round. Hadi Teherani: ‘I wanted to create a building that is subordinate to this marvellous landscape, but is still present. A quiet experience of great intensity, especially in the 50 metre long infinity pool, embedded in a large lake and the vastness of this unique landscape.’
The ‘Atmosphere by Krallerhof’ spa and wellness centre created by Hadi Teherani Architects extends the five-star Hotel Krallerhof in Leogang, Austria, south of Salzburg. The hotel, run in the name of the Altenberger family, is thus continuing its tradition of luxury accommodation established 600 years ago and is finding its new path into the future with the new elements of spa and wellness.
»It is a unique place that promises hotel guests a special kind of relaxation experience. All this embedded in the slopes of our local mountain, the Asitz. We are delighted to be able to take the innovative tradition of our hotel into the future and offer our guests a year-round experience! True to the Krallerhof motto ‘Giving more is our nature’«enthuses Philipp Altenberger, the third generation of the hotelier family
The design consists of a curved and staggered roof construction that blends into the green space as a 100 metre wide green landscape element. The weather-independent entrance connects the hotel and spa directly and is accentuated halfway through by a spiral-shaped courtyard leading into the depths. This offers visitors the opportunity to delve further into the interior with its wide range of offers or to explore the newly created 5,500 square metre natural lake as the centrepiece of the newly created landscape all around. The path also leads over the roof of the SPA. The main design idea was not to restrict the expansive views from the hotel and to integrate the new building into the topography of the alpine terrain.
The new SPA element utilises the existing differences in terrain from east to west in its gradations, which can be traced right up to the main roof. The predominant materials of wood and stone in the interior do not compete with the view, but rather intensify it.
The west-facing upper floor with the ‘Café am See’ opens up a view of the swimming pond with a large terrace and integrated heated infinity pool. The café, with a clear ceiling height of over 5 metres, can already be seen from the ground floor with its height of over 9 metres. The undivided glass west façade can be completely sunk into the ground over a distance of more than 22 metres to completely merge the interior and exterior spaces and open up the panorama to the Leoganger Steinbergbahn cable car opposite.
On the ground floor, in addition to the foyer, changing areas and adjoining rooms, there are a variety of sauna attractions as well as the relaxation room with its own air circulation system that is safe for allergy sufferers. In addition to the ‘Blue Grotto’, a water vault made entirely of exposed concrete with double-curved entrances, the wooden ‘Amphi-Sauna’ is a special highlight for guests. The double-curved wooden sculpture, which is 21 metres wide and 4 metres high, offers a Finnish sauna and a herbal sauna and opens up a view of the eastern valley through a wide, all-glass façade.
The curved wooden slatted ceiling serves as a connecting design element. Over a length of 175 metres, it connects the existing building with the end point of the main roof. The CNC-milled construction follows the ever-changing geometry and becomes the link between all the components.
With the help of regional companies, the choice of materials is limited to local products in the interests of conserving resources in order to take account of the genius loci and short production routes. In addition to exposed concrete walls in vertical board formwork, local wood, glass produced in Salzburg and Alpine marble from the immediate neighbourhood are used for special furniture. The fuel for the heating comes in the form of wood briquettes made from sawdust from the neighbour.
»I wanted to create a building that is subordinate to this marvellous landscape, but is still present. A quiet experience of great intensity, especially in the 50 metre long infinity pool, embedded in a large lake and the vastness of this unique landscape.«Hadi Teherani
